Podcast Reflection

Prior to reading the podcast, I knew that writing was important in the field of engineering to a certain extent. However, now I understand as to why the role of writing in any engineering field is so important in order to do your job. The podcast I read was the one with Elijah Jones and the reason I chose this one instead of one of the other two is because hardware design has always been something that I liked watching and with Elijah being one and explaining what he does is nice to read. Reading about his experience trying, learning and the process of making circuit boards was really interesting to understand. In terms of communicating, Elijah mentions that his company communicates via email and the use of various acronyms. For emails, if you think that the tone of your email seems a bit rude or bad, taking a break and making sure your email does not come out that way will help. As for acronyms, knowing the acronyms for things, especially in engineering, helps work continue to be faster and makes communication between the company significantly easier. Overall, the podcast did change the way I view the role writing has in engineering because it taught me how progress reports, emails and presentations can help companies get what is needed or in demand for a project. I would define the role writing has in engineering as the one of the tools that hold everything together because in order to talk about designs, ideas and how work gets done, everything must be written and documented. The podcast did illuminate anything about writing the lab report that I had not thought of perviously which was the use of vocabulary to describe and explain the process of something. In my lab report, it was difficult to configure my words so that the reader could understand what was being said.
